Friends-
The paper work has been completed to induct Rex Dunn into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. I do not believe that the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame is just for world champions, I believe it is for those who have contributed and given back to the sport, which I feel Rex has gone that extra mile for fans, committees and the bullfighters/clowns throughout the years. The following is the letter that was attached to the application. If you are a friend, fan, committee, or competitor of Rex's and would like to show your support please send an email to :SSanders@ProRodeo.com and indicate you would like to have her save in a file to show support for Rex's selection into the hall of fame. My hope is for there to be overwhelming support for a great man who has done great things for the sport of rodeo.
God Bless
Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Selection Committee:
I would like to nominate rodeo clown/bullfighter, fighting bull contractor Rex Dunn for the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame under the contract personnel category.
Rex Dunn was one of the last “old school” rodeo clown/bullfighters, in that he was a very capable bullfighter who still carried acts and entertained crowds with comedy. As mentioned before in the application, he was selected to work the NFR for three years, qualified for the Wrangler bullfight finals six years, was selected PRCA clown of the year in 1985, was selected for 13 circuit finals, worked the Canadian Finals twice, worked the Ronald Reagan’s Presidential Rodeo and many of the major rodeos across the USA and Canada. Rex was the epitome of toughness both physically and mentally, coming back from major injuries and disappointing setbacks in his career as a bullfighter. A few times those injuries cost him a world title, yet he came back and fought with the kind of mental toughness and mental attitude that only a select few individuals posses.
Rex took the job of bullfighter and the sport of bullfighting seriously, as exemplified before. In 1986 he became involved in the fighting bull stock contractor and breeding business. As in his bullfighting, Rex was serious about owning only the meanest animals on the planet. Rex selectively bred to raise only the hottest, most aggressive, most athletic bulls around. He supplied 138 head of fighting bulls to the Wrangler NFR Bullfight finals from 1986 until the end of the bullfights in 2000. Rex has continued to carry the sport of freestyle bullfighting on even after the PRCA ended the contests, supplying bulls to the PBR bullfights, and co-producing the largest and richest bullfighting tour currently in existence. Rex along with wife Tracie and sons Jace and Kyote , have one of the best fighting bull breeding programs in the world , which produces the hottest, meanest bulls in the rodeo industry. Rex’s knowledge of fighting bulls enables him to set the pens for his productions evenly, which assures each and every man entered a chance to win.
Rex promotes the rodeo bullfighter in more ways than in the arena. He has appeared in numerous movies and documentaries, and worked as stunt director for a few bullfighter and rodeo based movies. Rex has appeared and technically advised or developed the stunts in the following movies: The American Bullfighter I and II, the second of which he appeared in and was mainly filmed at his ranch. Painted Heroes and Cowboy Up are two more movies in which Rex appeared, assisted or advised on the stunts involved in the movie. Rex has given many of the past and present superstars of bullfighting good basic fundamentals and a place to begin by developing Coyote Hills Bullfighting Schools. A person would be hard pressed to find someone who has given back to the sport and profession of professional bullfighting more than Rex Dunn.
Rex is currently in the fight of his life, battling a rare form of cancer. True to the man I have known for years, he is fighting with all his heart and might. While Doctors have not given him a bright outlook, Rex continues to fight to prove them wrong, there is no quit in Rex Dunn. Few people will ever meet a man that has as much heart, courage, humbleness, moral character, physical and mental toughness as Rex Dunn.
Respectively
Doug Munsell
